5 Christian Celebrities Who Put Family Before Hollywood

By Movieguide® Contributor

We live in a culture that puts career and self above all, but God calls us to love our family and to invest into them. This is our greatest ministry as Christians. It can be a hard task for Christian celebs in Hollywood to prioritize family above career, but we’ve gathered together a list of several actors that are making steps and are vocal about keeping family first.

Candace Cameron-Bure

Candace Cameron-Bure’s name is synonyms with Christian celebrities who put family first. After the pandemic, she commented on the importance of putting family before her career.

“There’s so much we are all doing from home, which has been a huge blessing in my life because of the time I get to spend with my family, but it also opened my eyes to realize that I need to invest more time. I’m a little bit of a work horse because I really love it and enjoy everything that I do” Bure continued.

“It helped me re-prioritize and those are really good things. I feel like I’ve just become a whole lot closer with my family over this past year and took a really deep look at my own life and choices and what I’m doing and I have come out with a better balance.”

Another Christian who’s no stranger to Hollywood is Tamera Mowry-Housley, wife to Adam Housley and mom of two. She opened up about prioritizing family dinners and maintaining a healthy work-life balance as an actress and a mom.

“I prioritize. I prioritize what’s important to me, to my husband, and to my family, and definitely putting them first. So whenever I have down time, it’s putting them first. I love to cook, and we just have bonding time in the kitchen. I get Aden involved. He likes mixing ingredients, measuring ingredients, pouring things, and stirring things. He loves to help with the clean up—he actually likes to help with the dishes. I don’t know how long that’s going to last, but I’m going to take advantage of that while I can,” Morey-Housley said.

Chris Pratt

Christ Pratt may be an A-lister starring in Blockbuster films like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and JURRASIC WORLD. Still, he’s another celebrity who has professed his love for Jesus and his family. His goal is to put his family first, and he also encourages others to have children.

“People say all the time, ‘Don’t rush to have kids.’ I personally disagree. Rush. Have them,” Pratt continued, “The younger you have kids, the more time they get to have with you. It’s wild. Having kids is incredible. The things you normally take for granted in life are new.”

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg is a long-standing actor in Hollywood who is a professing Catholic. He emphasizes the importance of family and faith, and he is sharing how he is putting his family over career. He opened up on THE TALK about what inspired he and his wife to move their family from Nevada to California.

“I want to be able to work from home. I moved to California many years ago to pursue acting, and I’ve only made a couple of movies in the entire time that I was there,” he said. “So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us.”

Neal McDonough

Movieguide® interviews Neal McDonough at the HOMESTEAD red carpet premiere.

Neal McDonough is another actor who has made controversial decisions with regards to his career and family. He has a strict “no love scene” policy when it comes to the roles he plays, which can be a challenge in Hollywood and cost him when he was dropped from the series SCOUNDRALS in 2010.

“It was a horrible situation for me,” he said. “After that, I couldn’t get a job because everybody thought I was this religious zealot. I am very religious. I put God and family first, and me second. That’s what I live by. It was hard for a few years.”

‘When Movieguide | The Family Guide to Movies & Entertainment Marc Cherry signed me, I said, “I’m sure you know, but I won’t kiss anybody,” McDonough recalled. ‘He was like, “But this is ‘Desperate Housewives!” I said, “I know.’ He paused for about five seconds and said, ‘All right, I’m just going to have to write better.’ And we had a great time.” He said he won’t kiss any co-star “because these lips are meant for one woman” — his wife of 16 years.”
