Everybody has their own little hideaway that they use to escape from it all – and the best ones are still a secret from the rest of the world.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) came out with a list of the most relaxing and underrated summer travel destinations, and a New England oasis appeared at the No. 5 spot.

“Whether you want to head to the Northeast United States for a cooler summer, a beachy destination in Florida or away from the tourist bustle in Greece, we’ve selected some of the top underrated summer travel ideas,” AAA said.

Here’s AAA’s pick for New England’s most underrated summer destination.

Ogunquit — Most underrated New England summer travel spot

Located in Southern Maine, Ogunquit is a beautiful section of the Maine coast.

Here’s what AAA had to say: “Sitting quietly on Maine’s southern coast, Ogunquit, Maine, offers sandy beaches and a comfortable fishing town atmosphere. This quaint coastal town offers a peaceful escape with its beautiful beaches, charming village, and relaxed vibe. Whether you’re strolling along the sandy shores or taking in the views on the scenic Marginal Way, Ogunquit is perfect for a peaceful retreat from the usual hustle.”

AAA also said that hiking, kayaking and sailing is also possible in Ogunquit. While only 22 minutes away from the suggested lodging of Port Inn Portsmouth, travelers could also visit the Ogunquit Museum of American Art or peruse the town’s charming downtown area.
